How to regulate the use of activated carbon

Improper maintenance of activated carbon (including catalytic activated carbon, bamboo activated carbon, activated carbon pellets bulk) may seriously weaken the treatment efficiency of the pollution control facilities, leading to the exceeding of the emission standard, and bringing unnecessary environmental protection risks and legal liabilities to enterprises. Therefore, when using activated carbon to treat waste gas, enterprises must establish a high degree of awareness of the norms, strengthen maintenance management, and strictly follow the 'three to' of activated carbon:

Enterprises should master the quality identification skills of activated carbon. You can use the simple method of 'one weighing, two watching, three testing' to make a quick assessment. 'One weighing' refers to weighing. High-quality activated carbon has a moderate density and uniform weight. By weighing, you can initially judge whether the density and texture of the activated carbon are up to standard. 'Second look' is to observe the appearance. Good activated carbon particles are uniform, the colour is black and shiny, and the surface is free of impurities. Through observation, you can screen out the activated carbon that meets the requirements in terms of appearance. The 'third test' is to verify the adsorption capacity of activated carbon through experiments. For example, a small amount of activated carbon can be put into water containing odour to observe whether the odour is adsorbed quickly.       This step can further confirm the actual effect of the activated carbon. After screening the activated carbon that meets the requirements, enterprises should ensure that the box is fully filled, leaving no gaps to maximise the adsorption efficiency of the activated carbon.

Enterprises two should establish a perfect operation and maintenance account of the waste gas treatment facilities. By recording in detail the operation and maintenance information of the activated carbon, such as the size of the box, the processing air volume, the filling volume of the replacement activated carbon and its iodine value and other key parameters, as well as the operation and maintenance records of the facility and the replacement of consumables, the enterprise can realise a comprehensive monitoring of the operating status of the exhaust gas treatment facility. For example, an enterprise replaces activated carbon every three months, and each time it does so, it records in detail the type of activated carbon replaced, the iodine value, the filling volume, and the treatment airflow before and after the replacement. Such records help the enterprise discover problems in the operation of the facility in a timely manner and take corresponding measures for improvement.

Enterprises three should regularly check the condition of the activated carbon. Activated carbon may become clogged with pores, whitish, crushed and wet during use, and these phenomena are signs of declining performance of activated carbon. Once these problems are found, enterprises should immediately replace the used activated carbon to avoid affecting the effect of waste gas treatment.
