Advantages of Activated Carbon Filtration

12x40 Mesh Activated Carbon
  • Natural filter media

Activated carbon is made from natural materials like coconut shell and wood, with no other substances or chemicals needed. This means that air or water can be filtered completely safely and naturally.

  • Easy and low-cost to maintain

Activated carbon is one of the most affordable filtration materials and requires limited maintenance. When an activated carbon filter has reached its capacity, the filter simply needs to be replaced.

  • Removes bad tastes and odors

No other affordable filtration technique is as effective as activated carbon at removing bad tastes and odors from air and drinking water.

  • Tackles a range of impurities

Aside from taste and odor, activated carbon effectively filters other organic chemicals, pollutants, gases, and microorganisms, depending on its application.

The Production Process of Activated Carbon Filtration

Carbonization
The carbonization process involves heating the selected raw material in the absence of oxygen. This step drives off volatile components, such as water and tar, leaving behind carbon-rich char. The carbonization process can take place in rotary kilns, retorts, or other specialized equipment.

Activation
The activation process is crucial for creating the porous structure of activated carbon. There are two main methods of activation:
● Physical Activation: In physical activation, the carbonized char is heated to high temperatures (800-1000 degrees Celsius) and treated with gases like steam or carbon dioxide. This process creates pores by causing the char to shrink and develop cracks.

● Chemical Activation: In chemical activation, the carbonized char is impregnated with a chemical activating agent, typically an alkali metal hydroxide or phosphoric acid. The impregnated char is then heated to moderate temperatures (500-800 degrees Celsius), resulting in the development of a porous structure.

Washing and Drying
The activated carbon is washed thoroughly with water to remove any residual impurities or chemical residues. The washing process may involve multiple stages and filtration. After washing, the activated carbon is dried to remove excess moisture.

Sizing and Packaging
The dried activated carbon is crushed, milled, or ground to achieve the desired particle size distribution. The activated carbon may undergo additional processing steps, such as sieving or pelletizing, to obtain specific particle sizes or shapes. Finally, the activated carbon is packaged and prepared for distribution.

Application of Activated Carbon Filtration

Air and Gas

Different kinds of activated carbon can be employed to filter gases. The specific form is chosen based on the intended outcome and includes cloth, pelletized, and granular activated carbon. Some of the most popular gas purification applications for activated carbon include removing hydrogen sulfide from natural gas and filtering breathing air in air-conditioning units. In this second application, activated carbon helps remove radon and odors from the recirculated air.

Food and Beverages

Activated carbon is used in the food and beverage sector to enhance the purity, fragrance, and taste of several foodstuffs and beverages, including concentrated juice. Sweeteners can also be decolorized and have unwanted by-products removed from them using activated carbon.

Mining

Activated carbon is also used in mining to recover precious metals, particularly gold. Due to its adsorbent nature, activated carbon is utilized in separating carbon from cyanide in the final stages of mining.

Water Treatment

Activated carbon is used in water purification as both a primary and tertiary treatment. For water purification, both granular and powdered activated carbon is used. In the initial treatment, the main purpose is to remove large particles and retain them. In the final stages of water treatment, activated carbon is used for taste and odor control.

FAQ

Q: How is activated carbon produced?

A: Activated carbon is produced by subjecting carbonaceous materials to high temperatures and chemical treatments. Physical activation involves heating the materials, while chemical activation involves impregnating them with activating agents and then heating them. Impregnated activated carbon is created by treating activated carbon with additional chemicals.

Q: Is activated carbon safe to use?

A: Activated carbon is generally safe to use. However, it is essential to follow the manufacturer’s instructions and use them in the recommended manner. Activated carbon is commonly used in various applications, including water and air purification, with no significant health risks when used correctly.

Q: Can activated carbon be regenerated?

A: Yes, activated carbon can be regenerated to restore its adsorption capacity. Regeneration methods vary depending on the type of activated carbon and the contaminants it has adsorbed. Common methods include thermal reactivation and chemical regeneration.

Q: What are the advantages of activated carbon adsorption?

A: They are commonly used to eliminate and remove contaminants from contaminated environments such as unwanted odor, taste, dyes, and other organic and inorganic contaminants. Because of their large surface area, activated carbons are inexpensive adsorbents. They are microporous in structure.

Q: What is the standard specification of activated carbon?

A: Activated carbon from carbonization temperature at 500°C has water content of 0,96%, ash content of 0,98%, volatile matter content of 19,30%, and fixed carbon content 79,72%.

Q: What are the requirements for activated carbon?

A: Liquid-phase applications require activated carbons with a larger pore size than for gas-phase uses, because of the need for rapid diffusion of the liquid to the interior of the carbon particles and because of the large size of many dissolved molecules to be retained.
